The Origin of Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple

While Kashi is unequivocally the city of Lord Shiva, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple holds a special, irreplaceable space in the hearts of its residents. Meaning the “Reliever from Troubles,” Sankat Mochan is a beacon of hope and devotion, drawing thousands of devotees every single day, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Founded by Tulsidas

The temple’s origins are deeply intertwined with Goswami Tulsidas, the great 16th-century poet-saint who authored the Ramcharitmanas (the Awadhi version of the Ramayana).

Legend states that Tulsidas was graced with a divine vision of Lord Hanuman at this exact location near the Assi River. Overwhelmed with devotion, Tulsidas established the temple, placing the deity facing Lord Rama, rather than the devotees—a unique architectural feature that symbolizes Hanuman’s eternal, unyielding focus on his Lord.

Unique Traditions and Offerings

Unlike many modern temples, Sankat Mochan has retained a rustic, uncommercialized charm. It sits amidst a thick grove of trees, which is home to hundreds of monkeys—considered the living army of Lord Hanuman (the Vanar Sena).

Devotees offer a special sweet made of gram flour (Besan ke Ladoo) and red vermilion (Sindoor) to the deity. It is firmly believed that reciting the Hanuman Chalisa within the temple premises removes the most insurmountable obstacles from one’s life.

The Cultural Hub

Sankat Mochan is not just a spiritual center; it is a massive cultural hub. Every year, the temple hosts the famous Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, a multi-day Indian classical music and dance festival. The greatest maestros of Indian classical music consider it the highest honor to perform here, offering their art as a direct prayer (Haazri) to Lord Hanuman at midnight.
