Scam Warnings & Safety

Kashi is a spiritual capital, but its crowded alleys can sometimes harbor predatory tourist traps. Read these critical warnings before walking the ghats.

Known Tourist Traps

Be aware of these common hustles targeting pilgrims and international visitors.

The "Manikarnika Wood" Hustle

Fake hospices or guides near Manikarnika Ghat will approach you claiming they need money to buy wood for a poor person's cremation. This is a well-known scam.

How to Prevent

Never give money to touts at the cremation ghats. If you wish to donate, do so directly to official trusts (like KashiGuide Annadanam) or recognized ashrams.

Temple Shoe Locker Traps

Unsolicited guides near Kashi Vishwanath will aggressively offer to "watch your shoes" for free, then forcefully guide you through a confusing pooja and demand hundreds of rupees afterwards.

How to Prevent

Use the official free lockers provided by the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust at the entrance gates. Firmly say "No" to unsolicited guides.

Delayed-Action Bhang Lassi

Some street shops sell lassis laced with Bhang (cannabis). The effects can take 2 hours to peak. Unsuspecting tourists consume too much and become disoriented, leading to theft or missing flights.

How to Prevent

Only consume Bhang from government-authorized shops if you choose to, and always travel with a sober companion. Avoid accepting lassi from strangers.

The "Boat Ride at 10x Price" Scam

Boatmen may quote exorbitant prices (₹2000-₹5000) for a standard 1-hour boat ride, especially if you are foreign or appear lost.

How to Prevent

Standard sharing boats cost ₹100-₹300 per person. Private boats cost ₹500-₹800 per hour. Book through KashiGuide or use the official Ro-Ro ferry.
