Do not try to do Varanasi in one rushed day. Stay at least two days, ideally three. The city lives at the edges of the day — very early morning and evening. The middle of the day is hot and crowded. The soul of Kashi reveals itself slowly.
Kashi Vishwanath — Go at 4 AM
Visit Kashi Vishwanath at 4 AM. The window between 4:30 AM and 4:45 AM is incredibly peaceful. Do NOT carry phones, bags or leather inside — leave everything in the lockers outside. Entering empty-handed is mandatory.
Ignore All VIP Touts Near Temples
Anyone near the temple gate offering a 'special VIP entry shortcut' for money is a tout — ignore them completely. There is NO secret paid entry beyond the official VIP booking. At cremation ghats, never pay for 'wood donations' — it is always a scam.
Respect the Cremation Ghats
Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats are sacred cremation sites — not tourist attractions. Never photograph the cremations under any circumstance. Stand far back, speak only in whispers, and be fully respectful. This is someone's final journey.
Ganga Aarti — Watch From a Boat
The evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat draws over 10,000 people. Watch it from a boat for a far better view. More importantly, do not miss the morning Aarti (Subah-e-Banaras) at Assi Ghat at dawn — it is quieter and far more spiritual than the evening one.
Always Negotiate Boat Prices First
Never accept the first price quoted by a boatman. A reasonable rate for a hand-rowed boat is ₹300–₹500 per hour depending on the season. Always clarify the total duration and the route before you board. Get the price in writing if possible.
Get Lost in the Ancient Galis
The narrow alleys (galis) behind the ghats are the true soul of Kashi. Put down Google Maps for one afternoon and just wander freely. You will discover 500-year-old hidden temples, tiny sweet shops, and profound quiet that no guidebook can show you.
Banarasi Silk — Buy Carefully
Varanasi is world-famous for silk, but many shops sell cheap synthetics to tourists. Only buy from government-recognized emporiums or certified weaver cooperative societies. If the price feels too good to be true — it is fake silk. Real Banarasi silk starts at ₹5,000+.
Cows, Bulls and Rooftop Monkeys
The narrow alleys are shared with cows and bulls — always give them the right of way and walk on the inner side of the path. On rooftops and open terraces, be very careful as monkeys are bold and will snatch food, bags, or any shiny items from your hands.
Visit Sarnath — Just 10 km Away
If the intense energy of Varanasi feels overwhelming, take a half-day trip to Sarnath, just 10 kilometres away. This is where Lord Buddha gave his very first sermon after enlightenment. The ancient Dhamek Stupa and the archaeological museum offer incredible peace and history.
Street Food — Eat Safely
Kashi's street food (kachori sabzi, malaiyo, tamatar chaat, lassi) is legendary and truly delicious. To stay healthy, only eat at stalls where the food is cooked fresh and piping hot in front of you. Never eat lukewarm food. Drink only sealed bottled water or filtered water.
Dress Modestly — Always
Varanasi is a deeply conservative and religious city. Both men and women must dress modestly at all times. Keep shoulders and knees covered, especially when visiting temples or participating in ghat rituals. Always carry a stole or dupatta that you can drape quickly when needed.
